King's Lynn parkrunners not Drained, but cleaning up

Lynn parkrunners were quick to pick up the baton when they were asked to help with a litter pick along the Bawsey Drain footpath.

The pick was organised by Erna Gotyar, a Keep Britain Tidy Litterheroes Ambassador and founder of Rooting for Earth.

Working in partnership with West Norfolk Council it was suggested that together with parkrun they could have a go at clearing the Bawsey Drain footpath, which she knew was used by many local runners.

She said: “I was really impressed with the runners, they turned up straight from their 5k run in their T-shirts and shorts to help us. The amount of litter

collected was incredible and we are already thinking about having another pick to clear the path all the way up to Lynnsport.”

The pick was timed to follow on from parkrun which takes place in the Walks each Saturday morning at 9am.

Lynn parkrun event director, Gary Walker, said: “It was great to see so many parkrunners give up a couple of hours of their time following parkrun run to get stuck in to clearing the path, which many routinely use for training runs.”

The area for the litter pick had been selected by Claire Thompsett, the borough’s parks manager, who also provided all the kit needed for the pick.

She said: “We see so many parkrunners in The Walks each week and knowing we had an area which was in a very poor condition asked if they wouldn’t mind helping us tackle it and they sprinted to the task.”
