Grimston wildlife photographer Julie Smart helps animals in Pott Row this winter with cable reel toadstool upcycling project
A wildlife photographer is encouraging others to help the county’s animals this winter as her upcycle project has proven a success.
Julie Smart, from Grimston, has seen an increase in furry friends visiting her hide area in Pott Row now that she has added her latest project to give new life to an unused object.
Recently, she was given an old cable reel which she had the idea of turning into a picnic table for the nature surrounding it.
Inspired by her huge fungi fascination, she turned the wooden reel into a fly agaric toadstool, more commonly known as a fairytale toadstool.
The project took her three days to make and since she already had most of the materials at home, it cost her about £30.
“It’s been my biggest project so far and I am really pleased with it,” she said.
“It stands out and it’s nice and bright.”
Julie added a range of autumnal decorations and now sees a variety of wildlife including squirrels, mice, birds and voles coming to enjoy the fruits of her labour.
She is now encouraging others to do something similar to make a difference as the colder months creep in.
“Even if you just put some feeders out, bowls with nuts and seeds it helps out - the animals need it,” she added.
Her upcycling projects are something she feels very passionate about.
“It’s surprising what you can find lying about in your shed.
“I’m always looking at things to see what I can do with them.”
Although she does not have any plans for future projects, she says something will pop up to inspire her soon.
