Photographer's long walk inspires a book and helps charities
During the coronavirus pandemic, Snettisham-based photographer Jon Clifton took a lone walk along the Norfolk coast path.
Three days and 53 miles later, he was back at home with a huge blister, aching legs, a smartphone full of images and inspiration for a new book.
And there was also the not so small matter of the £1500 he had raised for local good causes.
Now Jon, who is furloughed from his job as a sound technician in London, has used the experience and the images he shot to tell the story of his “long walk home” in his second book of photography, Somewhere in Between – An Adventure on the North Norfolk Coast Path.
And he has dedicated it to victims of Covid and to pandemic heroes.
Published last month, along with square format images which tell the visual story of Jon's walk from Cromer to Snettisham, the book touches briefly on themes related to the Coronavirus pandemic.
His book's title comes from the feeling of uncertainty Jon felt after being furloughed from his day job and not knowing what the future might hold. Publication has been timed to coincide with the lifting of lockdown restrictions and the gradual return of hope.
Jon said: “The walk was a huge personal challenge and I think the story ties in well with themes of perseverance and battles against adversity, things we've all had too much practice in over the past few months. It felt incredibly important to document this period of life and the book includes memories from a strange time that will last a lifetime.”
From beautiful beaches to remote marshland and glorious countryside, Somewhere in Between features a selection of images that visitors to (or residents of) the Norfolk coast will appreciate and perhaps find solace in if they are currently unable to visit.
Produced with the help of 20 sponsors, the book has been dedicated to 'those who've lost their lives to Covid-19, our incredible NHS care staff and the scientists who discovered the vaccines”.
The book is available to order now via Jon's website www.joncliftonphotography.com. It will also soon be available to order online through Amazon and Waterstones. Later in the year, Jon hopes to be able to attend local art and craft fairs to sell the book in person.
He is now in the process of planning a second coast path walk. Next time he hopes be joined by a small group of fellow adventurers, all raising money for local causes close to their own hearts.
