Plans for new police station at Swaffham at Ecotech Business Park
Plans have been put in place to build a new police station at Swaffham to replace the existing station in the town.
The new station will be built at the Ecotech Business Park, running adjacent to the A47 to the north of the town.
Occupying a previously undeveloped parcel within the business park, the 0.94 hectare greenfield site will be surrounded by industrial, healthcare and retail buildings.
The new police station, which is expected to cost somewhere in the region of £3.5 million, will be divided into three main elements, called the ‘Office block’ for the main frontage to the site, the ‘Amenities block’ for servicing and storage space and the ‘Entrance/Link’.
There will also be a separate bungalow building located to the west of the site to provide a public arrival point as well as a car park.
Breckland Council’s plan for the new building states: “The main building has been strategically orientated in the south-east corner of the site to provide a secure boundary to the road to the south and eastern boundary with Waitrose.”
A high black mesh security fence will be put up to the perimeter of the site.
The new station has been built as part of Norfolk Police’s 2020 vision, which seeks to secure investment in detective resources and specialised investigation hubs to match increased demand.
The vision also focused on a review of neighbourhood resources and an increase in police officers and pro-active policing.
Replacing the station on West Acre Road, the new building has been designed to be much more sustainable with renewable and efficient heating and lighting options.
It will also make use of sun shading to minimise overheating in the summer months.
Cycling and walking will also be encouraged according to the plan, with increased areas for cycle storage as well as tree lined walkways at the site.
