Police appeal after woman raped in Downham Market

An investigation has been launched after a woman was raped in Downham at the weekend.

Police say a woman in her late teens was attacked in the Rouses Lane area of the town sometime between 3am and 8am on Sunday.

And they have urged anyone who may have been in the area during that period to come forward.

Detective Inspector Richard Weller, of Norfolk Police, said a short time ago: "We understand people will be very concerned at the seriousness of this report.

"We will be carrying out extra patrols in the area to offer support and advice to our local communities."

Police say they want to speak to anyone who may have been travelling in the area of Rouses Lane and Stonecross Road between the times stated, and who may have seen either a man or a woman.

They also want to hear from anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at the time.

The incident comes little more than a month after a teenage girl was raped in Great Ryburgh, near Fakenham.

However, Det Insp Weller says the cases are not thought to be linked.

Anyone with information about the Downham case is asked to contact Swaffham CID on 101, quoting Operation Loddington.

Information can also be provided by calling Crimestoppers free on 0800 555111.
