North Norfolk Police warn residents to stay vigilant after six attempts of courier fraud take place across the county in one day, including in Downham Market

Police are warning residents to be vigilant after fraudsters posing as police officers attempted to take people’s bank details.

Six separate incidents of courier fraud - a type of scam where a victim is convinced to give their card details to a criminal - have taken place across the county today, including one in Downham, as well as Great Yarmouth and North Norfolk. No money was taken in today’s attempts.

Those living in the area are now being urged to stay vigilant to the scammers.

North Norfolk Police has issued the following advice:

• Be aware that your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details to anybody.

• Know that neither the police nor the banks will send a courier to collect money from you.

• Always request photo ID and if you are unsure call the police.

• If you're asked to telephone a bank, always do it on a different phone to the one you were contacted on.

• Make sure you have hung up from the original call and you can hear a dialling tone before calling police or use a friend or neighbour's telephone instead as fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ringtones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number.

• Do not rush into complying with the scammers’ demands or requests.
