Popular Downham Market pub closes its doors as 'bad times outweigh good'

A popular pub in Downham has closed its doors, citing the "current climate" as the reason for its closure.

The proprietors of The Swan Hotel, Nikki and Brendan Morgan, who had run the business on High Street for almost five years, took to social media to announce the decision ahead of the closure on Sunday, March 31.

A post on The Swan Hotel's Facebook page titled 'The End is Nigh', which was posted on March 28, said: "It is with great sadness that the time has come for us to say goodbye to The Swan Hotel.

"We have made many lifelong friends over the last four and a half years and are so very grateful to those who have continued to support The Swan through the good and the bad times."

The post said the bad times had started to outweigh the good, leading to the pub's closure on 11.59pm on Sunday, March 31, which saw patrons enjoy the "usual" Sunday night karaoke before it closed its doors.

"We have had some amazing times here at The Swan Hotel and we will both miss it very much but, in the current climate, it is simply not viable for us to keep open," it added.

"Thank you to all of you - we hope to see you again in the future, Brendan and Nikki."

During Mr and Mrs Morgan's time running the pub, they hosted a number of sporting stars, such as professional darts champion Eric Bristow and snooker ace Jimmy White.
