Rose and Crown pub in Harpley closes down

A popular venue which was named the best destination pub in Norfolk last year has closed.

It was with “heavy hearts and souls packed full of pride” that staff at the Rose and Crown in Harpley announced the decision in late January.

The team cited “unprecedented” financial difficulties, but were able to enjoy a final few nights of drinks and laughter before shutting down.

The Rose and Crown was named Norfolk's best destination pub at the Muddy Stilettos Awards last May.

A statement from the venue on January 24 said: “Over the past eight years we have had the honour of a lifetime to share your highs and lows, celebrations and commiserations - making so many forever friends along the way.

“However, in the current unprecedented financial climate; with utility, staff, supplier (and every other!) cost at an all time high, we feel that the time is right for us to step away from our amazing pub in Harpley.

“We have thought long and hard but we firmly believe this is the right thing to do, leaving with nothing but wonderful memories of the times we have all shared together.”

It added: “We would be honoured if you could join us over the weekend and raise a glass or two to the friendships we have made in the time we have been here, we have been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such fantastic people.

“Our last day here will be on Sunday (January 26), so please come and give us a hug. After that, we are going to take a break and enjoy some family time - at last!”

The pub was well known for its Sunday roasts, and hired local man Will Horne as its new head chef as recently as October.

It also launched a street food hut in 2023.

In late January, North West Norfolk MP James Wild said he was saddened to hear of the closure.

“They’ve created a wonderful pub recently recognised as the best in Norfolk,” he wrote on social media.

“Sadly the challenges for hospitality businesses are very hard and getting tougher.

“Was glad to be able to raise a glass with them yesterday and wishing them well for the future.”
