Downham Market Town Council discusses 3G pitch for town

Councillors have approved a suggestion to apply for funding for a ‘much needed’ 3G pitch which could enable more sports to be played in Downham.

It comes after Cllr Justin Lewis asked for permission to start the project officially.

The pitch is proposed to be built on the Jubilee Community Centre site.

Cllr Lewis said: “This project can be for the whole community, for people of all ages and abilities.

“It is much needed in Downham, teams could come here especially to use the facilities. I think it is something the town needs.”

Cllr Lewis needed the backing of his fellow councillors in order to make grant applications to Sport England.

It is estimated that the pitch, which could be used for the likes of football and hockey, would cost between £1-1.2million.

During the meeting last Tuesday, Cllr Jacqueline Westrop said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea and is much needed in the town.

“We need to expand this for the community.”

Cllr Lewis added: “There could be jobs made out of this.”

The initial idea is that the pitch would be made available to groups and members of the public to rent out for a certain period of time.

It was recommended by Cllr Bet Moyses that the council go to its secondary school, Downham Market Academy, to see if they are interested in the project.
