Sporle pub believes it is first in the country to change name to King Charles III

A pub in Sporle is believed to be the first in the country to change its name to King Charles III.

The consortium-run establishment near Swaffham used to be called the Sporle Village Pub and before that the Squirrel's Drey.

Emma Farmer, who is a member of the small group who took on the lease, said: "Everyone has their own opinion and we just wanted a new name and it seemed a fitting year to be called King Charles III.

"We believe we are the first in the country to have this name and it is a fresh start."

Emma said the group had announced the idea to change the name on New Year's Eve.

Having been given permission, the pub has now been open for three weeks, with the new signs put up on Friday.

The change in name has had some mixed reaction from residents, but the majority have been positive.

"There is the link to Sandringham and as a child I used to go and see the Royal Family at Christmas," Emma added.

"We will be celebrating the connection throughout the year with live music and starting a monthly quiz.

"We want it be a traditional pub with food that is family friendly."

Current opening hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 5.30pm-10pm, Friday 3.30pm-11pm, Saturday noon-11pm and Sunday noon-8pm.

Emma said: "We are just serving Sunday lunches for now and will extend our opening hours once we get a new chef.

"We serve real ales and a great selection of drinks."
