Last week local campaigners took to the streets of Downham to get the message out that "we must have funding for a new QEH and we can’t wait any longer".

The stall at the local market was organised by Lib Dem councillor Josie Ratcliffe and supported by fellow councillor Jo Rust, Green Party member Pallavi Devulapalli, Dave Dennis and Sue.

Nearly 500 postcards were returned and signed in preparation for the campaign trip to London to lobby the local MPs over the desperate need to secure funding.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Lynn is currently held up by over 200 steel props as staff and patients continue on despite the dangers.

The roof has already collapsed in several places around the hospital, one incident in the maternity unit where a woman was giving birth just hours before.

Ms Rust said:"We know that the local community care passionately about their hospital.

"We must show the politicians and decision makers how much they care.

"We must show the politicians and decision makers how much they care.

"So we’ll be going to Parliament on Wednesday 15th September to hand deliver hundreds of signed postcards to Sajid Javid calling on him to agree to fund a new building.

"Not only is the hospital being held up with over 200 props, but there’s also the asbestos to deal with which will add to the costs.

"We can’t be fobbed off with a watered down version of what we actually need and we shouldn’t have to compete with other hospitals to get this funding.”

MP Jeremy Corbyn came to Lynn last month in support of the campaign and spoke alongside Dr Devulapalli, who continues to campaign around the county.

Ms Ratcliffe said:“We were at the market in Downham from 8am until close and the response was amazing.

"So many people care about the QEH, the staff and the patients. They know the building is long past its best and must be replaced, no ifs and no buts. We shouldn’t have to wait until Spring next year to find out if the bid has been successful, we should know now.”

Hospital management have already submitted one bid, which was turned down.

Hospital chiefs have been told to submit bids for less than £400 million according to the Health Service Journal, which leads to fears that any plans will be "watered down".

Campaigners have been to Hunstanton, Downham, Fakenham and Lynn.

Next month they’ll also be in Swaffham getting the word out, prior to going to Parliament to lobby all local MPs as well as hoping to speak to Sajid Javid.
