Rapid coronavirus tests to start in Downham Market next week

Rapid lateral flow coronavirus testing will be available in Downham from next week, officials have announced today.

Alive Downham Leisure is one of two venues in West Norfolk where the tests, which provide results within 30 minutes, will be available from Monday, along with the St James Pool in Lynn.

Tests will be on offer at the two sites on weekdays until March 12.

Over the past two weeks, the tests have been available at St James, as well as the Fairstead Community Centre and Hunstanton’s Oasis centre.

Officials say test centres will be moved where necessary, in line with latest data.

Anyone who receives a positive result will be advised to self-isolate immediately. They will be referred to test and trace and will need to ensure that anyone in their household also self-isolates.

Stuart Dark, West Norfolk Council cabinet member for environmental services and public protection, said: “ I would encourage everyone who has to leave their home in King’s Lynn or Downham Market to undertake essential business to take advantage of this opportunity to have a test and to have the test repeated at least once a week.

“Anyone of us could have the virus and could be spreading it unknowingly because we do not have any symptoms.

“Symptom-free testing is an extra tool to help reduce the opportunity for the virus to be transmitted.”

“Even if the test result is negative, it is still vitally important that people follow the lockdown restrictions and adhere to social distancing, handwashing and wear face coverings when required.”
