Walton Highway residents claim gypsy and traveller site application is making them ‘depressed’
Villagers have said a proposal to create a gypsy and traveller site in their community has left their homes “worthless” and is causing them to become “depressed”.
The location in question is a strip of land in Walton Highway, which has caused frustration locally since a caravan was placed there three years ago.
West Norfolk Council had intended to take enforcement action against the owner of the land, off Common Road, which used to be an orchard prior to the development.
But officers have now made a U-turn and recommended it should be allowed to stay, due to changes in planning rules which have left the authority under pressure to find more locations for gypsy and traveller sites.
It has since put forward this land as one of the 100 pitches it needs to find as part of its local plan.
However, at a planning committee meeting yesterday, Julian Kirk, a Conservative councillor for the area, explained how the situation was affecting residents.
He said: “People have put their properties up for sale recently in this small hamlet. When searches have been completed, potential buyers are pulling out due to this application.
“These properties are now worthless. Residents are experiencing mental health issues, depression, anxiety and potential financial loss.”
Cllr Kirk added that he believes the site is inappropriate due to it being close to other properties and at risk of flooding.
The owner of the land, Freddie Brazil, hit back at critics in a letter to the borough council, saying gypsies and travellers have a right to own property and participate fully in society.
Mr Brazil says the site is his home and that fly-tipping near the site, which neighbours complained about to the council, was not him.
Councillors were due to make a decision on the application but members voted unanimously to defer it.
Cllr Tom Ryves called for this action to allow the Government to respond to its local plan, which will then confirm whether or not the site will be allocated for gypsies and travellers.
It means villagers could face a long wait before a final decision is made on the application.
