Residents at East View Park in West Winch frustrated by Anglian Water’s lack of action as sewage water flows from drain
Raw sewage has reportedly been flowing out of a village drain for days – and residents have bemoaned a lack of action.
People living at East View Park, a residential area for over-55s in West Winch, have watched from their windows as water has flowed from a manhole cover since December 22 – with some of it entering their homes.
They believe the flooding has been caused by a leak in one of Anglia Water’s systems, and although the company managed to visit the site within two days, the issue still remained unresolved as of Thursday (December 28).
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Lynn News that “there are a number of vulnerable and disabled residents who have been very concerned and frightened by what is happening”.
They said that last Sunday, Anglia Water deployed mobile tankers to drain the effluent from the site and surrounding area.
However, because it took them two days to deploy the tankers, this is believed to have allowed gallons of sewage to disperse into the surface water drainage – worrying residents that it has caused “environmental impact as well as possible health problems”.
The water company was contacted for comment, but has failed to provide any response.
The anonymous resident said he wanted “to highlight how slow Anglia Water has been in rectifying what can only be described as a critical situation”.
He said: “It has now been eight days since this major incident was reported to Anglia Water, and as of December 28 they still have not repaired the fault.
“Many thousands of gallons of raw sewage water has entered the environment via the surface water drainage system, which on this site leads onto the countryside.
“The situation as of December 29 is still the same, with the the main sewer still blocked. However, Anglia Water did have a pump running all night to keep the effluent from running down the roads.”
