West Norfolk residents could see electricity bills spike if they do not switch from RTS boxes to smart meters

People are being warned of unexpected electricity bill hikes if they do not make the switch to smart meters by the end of this month.

RTS (Radio Teleswitch Service) boxes, a technology introduced in the 1980s, will cease to work come the end of June.

RTS boxes are attached to electricity meters in homes with an all-electric supply. Their purpose is to tell the meter when to switch between peak and off-peak, and are a vital part of keeping costs under control for all-electric customers.

It is the responsibility of utility providers to help customers with the switch. However, research in West Norfolk suggests that although they have written to their customers, there are some people have a mistrust of smart meters.

“Our concern is that some vulnerable customers will find their bills soaring in June, when their meter will stop differentiating between peak and off-peak, so they will be charged peak prices for all consumption,” a source told the Lynn News.

Although it is not responsible for alerting customers to the changes, West Norfolk Council is offering advice to residents.

“If you still have an RTS box, you need to contact your energy supplier – they have a duty to sort this out for you, free of charge,” a dedicated web page says.

“They should have written to you already but if you missed the letter, call them as soon as you can – their number will be on your bill.”

For people who are unsure of what to do, the council says: “Call your energy supplier – they will be able to tell you and help you understand what to do.

“If it seems a bit difficult to work it all out, ask to go on to their Priority Services Register – that way you’ll get extra advice and support.”

“We know that some people are a bit suspicious of smart meters and your supplier can’t make you have one,” the authority adds.

“We also know there are a small number of homes where they can’t be fitted.

“We would recommend you talk to your supplier. They will help you work out what is best for you, see if they can find a different solution, and make sure you don’t pay more than you need.”
