Review of Spy Movie: The Play at Norwich Playhouse - Slapstick comedy full of puns and belly-laughing moments

Spy Movie: The Play - Norwich Playhouse

It’s the first ever UK tour of this Edinburgh Festival Fringe hit show - and Norwich Theatre is one of the backers, writes Sarah Hardy.

This slapstick comedy is just right for this time of year - it's a bit silly, full of puns, double entendres, and is really just a clever spoof on the whole Bond movie franchise.

The plot is as contrived as you would imagine: you, the audience, are all movie producers as a screenwriter tries to pitch her film idea, but only has the budget to present it as a rather ropey low-budget stage play.

It sees Agent Jane Blonde (played by Jo Hartland) tackling a succession of villains in a bid to save the world - all very familiar Bond territory.

There are just four actors playing goodness knows how many roles, and they all have great timing and display considerable skill as they flit from character to character, helped by hats, moustaches, and a lot of imagination.

If you like The Play That Goes Wrong, The 39 Steps, and Peter Pan Goes Wrong, this is just the show for you! There are plenty of belly laughs, so accept the mission and grab a ticket!

The show has now left Norwich and is touring the country.
