Review of The Barn Restaurant in Terrington St John: We missed out on a pod... but food was lovely and the service superb

.

I've heard wonderful things about this place in the past and, as a lover of nice restaurants and good food, it was on my list as somewhere I wanted to try.

The Barn in Terrington St John has always caught my eye when driving past, with its lit-up dining pods outside, so I finally took the opportunity and booked it for me and my partner, Brandon.

Unfortunately the pods were fully booked, but we were more than happy to take a table inside the restaurant.

Upon entering The Barn on a Saturday evening, we were greeted and shown straight to our table by the friendly waiter.

The table was set out nicely with a napkin and two sets of cutlery each.

When we first arrived at 5.45pm it was not busy at all with only two other tables being occupied, but after a little while it started to fill up. The atmosphere felt calm and relaxed, with very friendly staff.

After being seated, the waiter took our drink order: we both chose a glass of coke (£3.20), but there was a wide range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages on offer.

We then looked at the menu which had a lot to choose from, including starters, The Barn Specials, pasta and salads, steaks, fish, burgers, and sides.

Between us, we got the wild mushrooms starter to share (£6.95).

For mains, Brandon went for the chicken in garlic and mushroom sauce, served with new potatoes and a bowl of vegetables (£15.95).

I decided to go for one of my favourites – Hunters Chicken – which is chargrilled chicken breast topped with bacon and cheese and coated in homemade barbecue sauce.

It was served with hand-cut chips and homemade coleslaw (£15.45), and then we got a side of fried halloumi cheese (£4.95).

We were both very pleased with our meals and thought the portions were well sized.

We agreed that the garlic mushrooms were the best we’d ever been served – the garlic was tasty without being overpowering and the mushrooms came served on a slice of bread. The main meals were very tasty with lots of flavours.

I really enjoyed my chicken dish, with the barbecue sauce just right and the chicken moist and cooked perfectly.

Brandon really enjoyed his too, and thought the sauce was delicious and the chicken lovely too.

We did find the halloumi rather bland, however, and both said we’ve had better.

Overall, we both enjoyed some lovely food, which left us far too full for dessert.
