King’s Lynn club helps with national clean-up of West Norfolk's waterways

Sailors and stand-up paddle boarders (SUPs) from the Ouse Amateur Sailing Club joined in with a national effort to clean up some of West Norfolk's waterways at the weekend.

During the sailing and paddle board activities, the club noticed quite a lot of rubbish in and near the water at Tail Sluice and decided to do something about it.

The #Paddle Cleanup Community had organised a national waterways clean and the club decided that after their regular weekend dinghy racing they would go out and collect as much of the rubbish as they could.

Saturday was cold and very windy so members concentrated on the riverbanks and surrounding areas.

In contrast, Sunday was a gloriously sunny day with lighter winds so we took to the water.

During the clean-up, the club collected about 15 sacks of various plastic containers, flower pots and old drink cans, two old rusty shopping trollies, a metal sunbed and a grass collection box from a lawn mower.

This rubbish can not only pollute the waterways but then make its way into the sea and can (and does) endanger the wildlife living in and near the water

The club thanks the clean-up community for supplying sacks, gloves and grabbers, the Environment Agency for helping us dispose of all the waste correctly and safely, plus everyone who took part.

As it was so successful, the club plans to make this a regular occurrence unless people start behaving properly and cut down on the use of plastic.

People are advised if they need to use plastic, recycle it with your regular council recycling collections.

Of course, taking your shopping trolley back to the supermarket also helps.

If you want to join in with the sailing and/or SUP then give the club's website or Facebook pages a look for more information.
