New cup awarded at Sandringham Flower Show
A new award was presented at Sandringham Flower Show on Wednesday in memory of show stalwart Fred Waite. Mr Waite, who died last year, was show chairman for 27 years and honorary life vice-president and trustee.
The show committee had introduced a new category into the estate gardens competition for the Fred Waite Plantsman Shield and it was presented to its first winner Peter Matthews by Princes Charles.
Show chairman, David Reeve said: “ His contribution to the development of the show, together with his leadership, commitment and vision have played a massive part in the success of the show. His role as head gardener on the estate brought a wide experience of all horticultural matters to our committee and this new trophy is in his honour.”
In spite of the dry weather there were still large numbers of entries in the horticultural classes and the judges reported high standards. The same support applied to the West Norfolk and King's Lynn Beekeepers Association's show again taking place at Sandringham. A total of 206 entries were received.
