A senior Norfolk police officer has been nominated to take over as the new chief constable of Cambridgeshire.

Nick Dean, who is currently Norfolk's deputy chief constable, has today been named as the preferred candidate for the role by Cambridgeshire police and crime commissioner, Jason Ablewhite.

Mr Ablewhite said: “Nick performed very well throughout the whole assessment process, with the Appointment Panel unanimously supporting my decision regarding Nick’s proposed appointment.

"During his time in Norfolk, Nick has demonstrated great leadership showing an understanding and inclusive approach to working with the public, communities and partners, and genuine desire to make a difference to the county. "

Mr Dean is due to be interviewed by Cambridgeshire's police and crime panel in a public confirmation hearing later this month.

If his appointment is confirmed, he could take over this autumn though a start date would need to be agreed.

Cambridgeshire's current chief constable, Alec Wood, is due to remain in the role until September.
