Margaret of Christiana ship on Hunstanton beach in 1856

In our fortnightly Picture This feature, Lynn Museum curator Dayna Woolbright looks at a 19th Century pencil sketch…

This pencil sketch by local artist Henry Baines (1823-1894) is of the Margaret of Christiana ship, pictured here aground on Hunstanton beach.

The drawing is dated May 4, 1856, and is dotted with other annotations.

Baines sketched many beach and maritime scenes in his lifetime. In 1886 he produced another image of the Margaret of Christiana, this time in oil on canvas. The ship was wrecked the same year while she was loaded with ice.
