Petition launched by Fakenham MP Jerome Mayhew for permanent Post Office after shock closure of Little Snoring branch

Concerns have been raised about an area’s postal facilities after the closure of a village branch was announced.

Residents in Fakenham and the surrounding areas have had the backing of their MP Jerome Mayhew in the ongoing fight for a proper Post Office for the area.

This comes after the company revealed it will be shutting down Little Snoring’s shop on Tuesday, July 8, due to the postmaster’s resignation. This would leave just one permanent facility offering postal services in Great Ryburgh - almost five miles from the village and more than four miles from Fakenham town centre.

“We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause,” the Post Office said.

A temporary branch was set up in Fakenham’s Miller’s Walk shopping area back in early 2020, but even after five years, the town seems no closer to a solution.

In a petition launched by Mr Mayhew, he said: “This is yet more bad news for residents in Broadland and Fakenham.

“This makes my campaign for a proper Post Office in Fakenham even more important, as Little Snoring is the closest Post Office for many residents.

“We need access to a permanent Post Office to service the needs of our community.

“We ask the chief executive to listen to our voices and to work with the banks to provide a long-term solution to access to cash and postal services through a post office in the heart of our town.”

Earlier this year, the MP met with the commercial director for Cash Access UK after it was announced that the town would lose its Lloyds Bank in July, meaning there will be nowhere for residents to make cash deposits in town.

He argues that a permanent Post Office would solve this issue, and is urging people to sign the petition here.
