Snow disruption to West Norfolk bin service continues

Bin collections in some parts of West Norfolk will be rescheduled for later this week as snow and freezing temperatures continue to disrupt services.

The programme was suspended yesterday morning because of the weather and residents in some areas which should have had their bins collected on Monday were asked to put them outside their homes again today.

West Norfolk Council officials say they are prioritising the collection of general waste from residents' black bins, rather than other services.

And that means people living in Hunstanton and other northern parts of the borough will have to wait longer for crews to empty their green recycling bins, though they are still being asked to leave them out.

The council said this morning: "Resources will be directed to the more built-up areas of the borough as these are likely to have better road access and therefore be safer in which to work.

"But additional snow fall overnight and freezing conditions have caused the conditions in the north of the borough, including Hunstanton, to deteriorate.

"It won't be safe to attempt recycling collections postponed from Monday. We'll reschedule these for later in the week."

The council says bin collections in Downham will take place as planned today, where it is safe to do so. Collections are likely to be later than normal.

Crews will also look to collect bins in areas such as Upwell and Outwell, plus other southern parts, where bins would normally have been emptied yesterday.

People living in Fincham, Walsoken and Welney are being asked to put their bins out again tomorrow.

Garden waste collections have already been suspended and the council says bulky waste collections scheduled for today will be rearranged.

The council also says that extra recycling can be put out for collection when crews are able to get to affected areas, though residents are advised to take the following steps:

Keep your extra recycling dry. Please don’t keep it outdoors next to your bin

Please only use clear (colourless) sacks for extra recycling - carrier bags, white bin liners or black sacks can not be accepted

Place flattened cardboard boxes and paper inside a larger box and put it next to your bin on the revised date.

No extra waste will be collected during black bin runs.
