Downham Market group gathers to honour four of its longest-serving volunteers
Members of Downham and District Heritage Society (DMDHS) gathered to mark its 30th anniversary this week - and to honour four of its longest-serving volunteers.
The Society, which began in 1995 thanks to the vision of former mayor and dentist Martin Stewart, has grown into a vital part of the community, preserving the town's rich heritage.
Now housed in the town’s historic Old Fire Station, Discover Downham continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of over 40 volunteers.
Held at the Discover Downham Heritage Centre, special recognition was given to Dave and Jess Flower, Heinz Heisler and Gerry Ryan - all celebrating their 90th birthdays this year - for their “remarkable” contributions to the Society.
Each received honorary membership and a hamper, presented in gratitude for their years of service.
Kathleen Wiseman, the only volunteer who was there when the Society began in 1995, shared memories of its founding and surprised the four long-standing volunteers with their awards.
Jess Flower is well known for organising coffee mornings and still helps bake for the monthly gatherings, and her legendary scones remain a highlight.
Her husband, Dave Flower, who once served as chair, played a crucial role in transforming the Old Fire Station into the vibrant heritage centre it is today.
Heinz Heisler has carefully documented the museum’s collections as its volunteer photographer for decades, preserving precious items from maps to artefacts.
Gerry Ryan, a former Barclays Bank manager, served as treasurer during the challenging conversion period and still lends his financial expertise.
“All four continue to offer huge support to the centre,” said one trustee.
“They’ve helped shape this place, not just with their time and effort, but with warmth and humour.”
Their enduring commitment shows the power of volunteering, not only in supporting the community but in building lasting friendships and finding purpose.
As the Society celebrates 30 years, it offers a heartfelt thank you to all its volunteers - past and present - and encourages others to get involved.
