Spate of tool thefts in Norfolk sees police urge van owners to take sensible steps to secure their property

Following a rise in tool thefts across the county, police have given guidance to van owners.

In the run-up to Christmas, officers faced a spike in overnight thefts across West Norfolk, Breckland and Broadland as well as South Norfolk and Norwich.

But since the new year, the number of these offences has decreased, which police put down to them making Norfolk a “hostile place for criminals to visit”.

Officers in West Norfolk say they have been working to track patterns and trends in the incidents in order to bring the numbers down, however, advice has been issued to ensure van owners take sensible steps to secure their property, including:

• Parking in a garage or secure compound if possible.

• Parking the side door near a wall so it can’t be accessed.

• Not leaving tools in the vehicle overnight.

• Marking your tools so if they are stolen there is a better chance that they can be returned to their owner and it decreases their resale value.

• Protecting your vehicle using advice from Secured By Design, an official police security initiative

People are also being urged to report suspicious activity by calling or reporting it online - if you see a crime in progress, it is an emergency and you can call 999.
