Hunstanton stalker Jamie Gibson avoids going to prison after assaulting and harassing former partner
A stalker who left his victim feeling “powerless and trapped” has avoided going to prison.
Jamie Gibson, 41, of High Street in Hunstanton, appeared at Norwich Crown Court last Monday to be sentenced for a string of offences.
Gibson previously pleaded guilty to stalking, harassment, assault and criminal damage back on March 13.
At an appearance at Lynn Magistrates’ Court last month, Gibson’s victim, who was in a relationship with him for a period of time, decided to attend court and take the stand to explain the “overwhelming control” he had on her life.
The offences took place between March 1 and March 11, after the pair had been separated for some time.
For the offences, Gibson was handed a number of suspended prison sentences, as well as rehabilitation activity days and a mental health treatment requirement.
Last month, the victim recalled how on one occasion, Gibson had got into her kitchen when the back door was momentarily left open.
“I had to live a hidden life to protect my peace, but it was not peaceful,” the victim said.
“He made me know my place, and I couldn’t have a different opinion from him. My feelings and emotions didn’t matter to him.”
The victim said she couldn’t seek the medical help she needed because of Gibson’s behaviour.
“I just want a peaceful life, the fear is not completely gone though,” she added.
“I have lost so much time. I hate it when people walk behind me; every time the door goes, it makes me jump.
“I feel like I should have spoken sooner. I felt pure dread when he was in my kitchen. I never expected that he could have gotten into my home.
“My home has been sabotaged, there are measures in place, but all it took was my child taking a bin out for him to get in.”
The victim said that she believes she is the fifth woman that Gibson has controlled.
Speaking about her relationship with Gibson, the victim said: “I felt powerless and trapped, I was walking on eggshells. My life is not the same anymore.
“He is the victim in his eyes.”
For harassing the victim, Gibson was handed a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.
He was also given a two-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, for assaulting the victim.
For stalking, Gibson was given a two-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.
He was also ordered to complete 25 rehabilitation activity days, a 12-month mental health treatment requirement and a nine-month alcohol abstinence monitoring requirement.
