Large operation saw huge steam turbine take to Port Sutton Bridge from Peterborough

Port bosses say a huge steam turbine was delivered ‘like clockwork’ – after a large-scale operation to ship it to Asia from Sutton Bridge.

Allelys haulage company moved the near 200-tonne machine from Peterborough to Port Sutton Bridge.

It caused some road congestion going past Spalding last Monday – with a police escort accompanying the major load along the A16, A151 and A17 – before being transferred by crane to a boat and taken away the following day.

Ben Ward, managing director at Port Sutton Bridge said: “Since taking over October 2022 the shareholders have invested heavily in the operation, with further investments planned for the future the facility will be busier than ever very soon.”

Gav Patrick, manager at the port, said: “It went extremely well.

“Allelys is a marvellous company and very good at what they do.

“Everything ran like clockwork.”

It was transferred by crane, which took three days to build by Allelys, to a ship to be moved abroad via Antwerp and onto Singapore.

Mr Patrick said: “Allelys did the transportation and the lift – it was a big thing to come in for people to see – the road was loaded with cars with people watching.

“They are a brilliant firm – professional to a T- and we appreciate the opportunity of it coming to the port.”

Project manager Shahid Islam said: “After several months of engineering, planning and preparation, we successfully completed the transport and offloading of a 176te steam turbine generator on to a vessel heading for Antwerp and on to it's final destination in Singapore.

“For this operation our team undertook the complete full service solution by providing project management, engineering support, including a route survey, transportation and lifting. To navigate such a long and high transportation arrangement on A-roads is no mean feat and I’m proud that the team delivered this safely and on schedule.

“Sutton Bridge Port will serve an important role in future projects to come for Allelys. Gavin Patrick and his team at Port Sutton Bridge are experienced, versatile and we look forward to building strong, long term relationships.”
