Storm Arwen U-turn: insurers Age Co due to pay up after tree falls on Ashwicken stables

A Lynn man has spoken of his relief after insurers have now agreed to proceed with a claim on his 85-year-old mother's property when Storm Arwen caused damage.

Back in November the storm's ferocious winds meant a tree fell and went through the roof of stables at Mrs Pat Wells' Ashwicken home.

Her son Stuart Wells, who lives in South Wootton, told the Lynn News last week that when his sister rang the insurance company, Age Co, they turned down the claim because the winds were not strong enough.

But it appears the insurers have done an about-turn and work is now due to begin on repairing the damage which Mr Wells – a carpenter for 34 years – estimates will cost around £10,000.

Asked whether he was relieved, Mr Wells replied: “Very much so.

“I spoke to my sister and they are getting an assessor to come out, at a date to be arranged."

When asked by the Lynn News for a comment, a spokesperson for Ageas, the provider of Age Co insurance, said: “We have looked at this claim again and believe that because the damage was created by a fallen tree it should be covered by the policy.

“We have contacted a family member of our customer who is authorised to deal with the claim on their behalf to let them know the good news and have agreed that we will appoint a supplier to validate this.

“We would like to apologise for our initial error and the inconvenience this caused.”
