Storm Babet: Pott Row’s The Compass School shut and racing at Fakenham called off as heavy rain hits Norfolk

Schools have shut and racing has been called off as Storm Babet has brought heavy rain and flooding to the region.

It comes as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain until 6am tomorrow morning.

It has warned that the spell of “persistent and at times heavy rain could lead to some disruption from early Friday through to early Saturday”.

The Compass at Pott Row is closed to all children today due to extensive flooding within the school and no heating, with remote learning in place.

A number of other schools shut early due to the “extreme weather conditions” and flooded roads, including Castle Acre Church of England Primary Academy, Rudham Church of England Primary Academy, Sporle Church of England Primary Academy and Weasenham Church of England Primary Academy.

Meanwhile, racing at Fakenham Racecourse has been abandoned due to “extreme rain”.

Officials said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter: “17mm rain has already fallen since 2.30am on Friday and a further 30mm to 40mm rain will fall during the day and not clearing until about 4pm on Friday.

“The situation will only get worse.”

Yesterday, they said a precautionary pre-race course inspection would take place at 7.30am today due to the “excessive rain forecast”.

“The well-being of our horses and riders is our highest priority,” they added.

And Delamores farm at Terrington St Clement has said it will be closed to pumpkin pickers today due to the weather, but open on Saturday and Sunday.
