Porter Street in Downham Market closed due to burst water main

A town street has been closed off due to a “likelihood of danger to the public”.

Norfolk County Council informed Downham residents that due to repairs of a burst water main, vehicles are being prohibited from using Porter Street from its junction with Victoria Street.

The road was shut two days ago, and is anticipated to last until Friday - but the council has warned it could remain closed until September 29 if more time is required.

A diversion route via Porter Street, Railway Road, Bennett Street and Victoria Street has been put in place.

A statement put out by the county council said: “The closure/restriction is necessary because of the likelihood of danger to the public or serious damage to the road or both.

“A person who contravenes, or who uses or permits the use of a vehicle in contravention of the restriction/closure imposed by the order shall be guilty of an offence.”

People who ignore the road closure could be fined up to £1,000.

The burst main belongs to Anglian Water.
