Praise for college students at King’s Lynn, Downham Market and Wisbech at award ceremony
The exceptional achievements of college students has been celebrated at an annual awards ceremony.
Prize-winners from the College of West Anglia (CWA) took to the stage on Tuesday at Lynn’s Corn Exchange to receive their awards.
The annual event recognised students from across all five locations – Lynn and Lynnsport, Downham, Wisbech and Cambridge – who have gone above and beyond in their studies, shown personal resilience or made outstanding contributions at college or in the community, the college said.
The award ceremony was attended by proud family members, staff and invited guests. The evening celebrated students' commitment, determination and success and included a buffet reception.
Awards were presented across a wide range of categories, including apprenticeships, personal achievement, land-based studies, inclusive learning, creative arts and technology.
Among the winners were Lynn campus students Benji Cunnell-Westhorpe, the overall student of the year in inclusive learning, and Alfie Cobb for personal achievement.
Chloe Wing received the Student of the Year award for the Department of Technology. In addition to this, she was also named the overall Student of the Year- a prestigious honour awarded to one outstanding individual from the category winners.
Michelle Devanche, director of the Bluebird Course and Benji’s nominator, said: “I am overwhelmed with Benji’s attitude and determination, and I am so proud to be his course director.
“I just know that firstly, the public services department will have an excellent student next year. Benji is a credit to CWA and is the epitome of the perfect student.”
Paul Howard, plumbing lecturer who nominated Alfie said: “A dramatic event in Alfie’s life resulted in him having serious behavioural issues in college.
“This year he reapplied and has demonstrated a massive change in behaviour, as well as showing great perseverance in battling his mental health issues.
“He has made fantastic progress, and his biggest gains are the fact that he has made the most significant course corrections to put his life and learning in order.”
College principal David Pomfret said: “These awards are always a personal highlight of the year for me.
“Chloe is an incredible example of a student who has grabbed the opportunities afforded her at CWA, she has determination and drive to achieve, and I'm extremely pleased we were able to recognise her and 29 other amazing students alongside her. Well done.”
