Business leaders say new efforts to extend Swaffham’s Christmas lights display are already bringing new interest to the town.

Last month, the new Swaffham Trade Association announced it had teamed up with the town council to plan this year’s switch-on, which will take place on November 25.

But the group also wants to the Buttercross and trees in the Market Place throughout the year and officials say they are encouraged by the response so far.

Chairman Colin Mason, who runs the Arts Lounge in the Market Place, said the gallery had also seen an increase in visitor numbers since the launch.

He said: “People are now realising that we are serious.

“Once the ball starts to roll, it picks up speed and that is what’s happening here. More people are getting involved because they realise Swaffham is a town that needs to be boosted.

“We need Swaffham to be a destination, not just a stop for a cup of tea and a cake.”

Mr Mason said the group was continuing its three year plan for the lights and arts and craft groups are currently being urged to sign up for a Victorian-themed market that will form part of the switch-on event.

For more information, or to obtain booking forms for the market, phone the town council on 01760 722922 or email theartsloungeuk@gmail.com.

Meanwhile, a few tickets are still available, priced at £10, for a fundraising event to be held at the town’s Conservative Club on August 5.
