Swaffham emergency appeal offering essential everyday items to those in need
Having already introduced a delivery service transporting meals to homes, a Swaffham pub has now extended its community service to everyday items such as toilet rolls and sanitary towels.
The White Hart in Swaffham decided to take action with people self-isolating at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Kurt Oliver, manager of the family-run business, said: "The idea was born out of the endless days that people are sat at homes running out of essentials.
"We know there are people who can't get out, vulnerable and disabled people who running out of things like nappies and soap."
As a result the shoebox appeal has seen a variety of items being donated including jigsaws, sachets of Calpol and chocolate.
The pub has also received a box of 100 magazines which are being included in hamper-style packages being delivered on request to the community.
Mr Oliver said there is currently a list of 30 volunteers who have offered to help as drivers when transporting the goods.
A community group has been set up on Facebook called the Swaffham Emergency Action Group, and the pub are keeping an eye on that for requests.
Speaking on how Swaffham is coping with the pandemic, Mr Oliver said: "The community spirit around here is absolutely amazing and everyone is out to help each other.
"I am absolutely stunned by the amount of donations and offers to help."
Among those offering assistance and donations to the cause is Swaffham's Breckland and county councillor Ed Colman.
Mr Colman said: "Schemes like this are vital at a time like this.
“Some people don’t know where to go to access the support or resources they need so being able to offer a range of things in one town centre location is really important.
“It gives people a chance to quickly access the items they need without having to wait and because this is a situation developing so quickly that’s really important.
“The amount of donations has been brilliant and these schemes can only help people thanks to people’s kind donations and someone pulling it all together.”
The White Hart has announced it will be extending its meals delivery menu to children as well.
"It seems that now there is a need to add children to that list," the pub announced having already introduced an adult's menu.
"We are working on a plan, but for now we are adding child portions of our daily menu choices for £2.50."
The service will be offered between the hours of 11am and 9pm with adults meals costing £5. This includes a choice of main courses and a pudding.
