All Our Yesterdays: Taking a look back at July memories in King’s Lynn, Hunstanton, Downham Market, Swaffham and Dersingham




In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature, we take a look back at July memories from 2013 and 2016…

July 2016: A new wildlife area developed in a corner of the Lynnsport complex at Lynn was formally named as “Salters Sanctuary”. Winner of a competition to come up with a name was Maggie Anderson, who is pictured receiving her prize from Mark Webster of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Also pictured are project support officer Sam Garrod and Michael de Whalley, chairman of the Gaywood Conservation Group.

July 2016: A celebration of Sea Sunday was held at Lynn, with a service at St Nicholas Chapel followed by this blessing of the boats at the Fisher Fleet, led by the Rev Laura Baker.

July 2016: Swaffham’s Junior Academy stepped back in time during its summer fair, when a time capsule buried in 1991 was opened by fair organiser Angela Sharman and Ian Harding. Its contents included photos of pupils, teachers and governors, a newsletter and textbooks.

July 2016: The curtain was raised for the 25th anniversary of Hunstanton Drama Festival, when a birthday cake baked by committee member Angela Blenkinsop was cut by festival chairman and chief adjudicator Michael Williamson (far left), pictured here with his team of adjudicators, guests and committee members.

July 2013: Friends and family of 29-year-old Barney Flanagan, who died from a brain tumour on June 21 at his home in Gayton, came together to form Team Flanagan to put on a fundraising fun day in his memory.

July 2013: Pupils from four schools are pictured at a rehearsal for their ukulele ensemble to be performed at the Music for Youth Festival in Birmingham. Children from St Martha’s Primary in Gaywood, St Michael’s Primary in South Lynn as well as schools in Methwold and Middleton, took part.

July 2013: Church leaders at Lynn Minster announced plans to complete a project to build the organ – which was originally started in 1895. The Victorian congregation put it on hold after running out of money, but now Canon Christopher Ivory is keen to see the organ developed to top recital quality.

July 2013: More than 30 children at Dersingham Primary School’s nursery class gathered on the playground to throw graduation caps in the air to mark the end of their time at the nursery.

July 2016: Downham’s Town Hall was brightened up by 63 exhibitors for the town’s annual horticultural society show and pictured here is the chairman, Mike Lodge.
