Tanning shop could be coming to Emneth if plans for old Curtis Butchers are given green light

A vacant butcher's shop could be turned into a tanning studio if plans are given the go-ahead.

Plans have been submitted for a change of use at the old Curtis Butchers at Gaultree Square in Emneth, which would see it turned into a tanning studio situated below existing accommodation.

The butcher’s shop has been shut for five years, while the upper floor is currently vacant and is being converted into a one-bedroom flat before re-letting.

A planning statement prepared by Inspire Architectural states that the surrounding buildings are a mix of residential and commercial properties, with a shop, post office, pub and a public car park located nearby.

Two previous applications to change the use of the building were both withdrawn, with a Mr Burlingham from Emneth submitting the new proposals.

Previous plans sought to change the premises from a butchers to a bistro bar, as well as a takeaway restaurant.

The new application seeks to change the use of the ground floor of the building to a small tanning studio.

The planning statement says: “This will be achieved, largely, by using the existing room structure and small internal changes. There will also be a small internal extension to form the bathroom space serving the flat.

“There will be two separate rooms housing a tanning bed each. There will also be space for changing within each room.

“The studio rooms will be served by a main reception, accessed directly from Gaultree Square. There will also be a staff room and accessible WC space formed within the existing spaces.”

The only external change would be the removal of the existing canopy, and some advertising would be incorporated within the front windows.

If the planning application is approved, the studio would be open between four and five days a week, with opening hours varying between 8.30am-9pm.

The flat will be formed using the remainder of the space and be accessed via an existing corridor within the building.
