Teenagers to face trial after denying arson attack which destroyed Swaffham couple’s home
Two teenagers are set to face trial after an arson attack which resulted in a couple’s home being destroyed.
On June 30 last year, a burning car was crashed into the property on Lancaster Road, Swaffham. Smoke tore through the interior, leaving several rooms burnt almost beyond recognition.
Firefighters were quick to attend the scene and extinguish the fire, and nobody was injured - although the couple who own it were forced to move into a hotel while repairs were carried out.
Shocking footage highlighted the extent of the blaze.
One teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was subsequently charged with aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, reckless arson, driving a car while unfit through drugs, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.
Another was charged with aggravated vehicle taking and reckless arson.
Both have denied all the offences, and they will face a trial at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on June 19.
Valentin Tacciu and his partner Manuel Scarrone, who owned the Swaffham home, previously spoke to the Lynn News about the impact the incident had on them.
Valentin, 28, was home alone with their pet dog Gizmo at the time of the incident, and was sleeping when the car struck shortly after 5am.
Valentin and Manuel, 43, bought and moved into the Lancaster Road new-build around three years ago. It was their first proper home, having lived in a rented property beforehand.
Following the fire, items of clothing were burnt, electronics such as computers and iPads were damaged, and a series of new belongings were rendered unusable.
