The Duck Inn at Stanhoe celebrates 'astonishing' achievement
The team behind The Duck Inn at Stanhoe are celebrating their "astonishing" achievement in the prestigious Top 50 Gastropub list.
The pub went straight into the 2019 Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub list, regarded as the "jewel in the crown" for UK foodie pubs, at number 35.
Chef patron Ben Handley, his brother Sam Handley, who is general manager, Jasmine Howard and Andrew Waddison attended the awards ceremony held at at Lillibrooke Manor, Maidenhead, yesterday.
Well-known TV chef Tom Kerridge, who cooked a special lunch for guests at the event, congratulated the team in person.
The Duck was one of only five new entries on the list and one of the highest climbers with its entry at number 35.
Ben Handley said at the event: “We are very proud to be here amongst some of the most talented and hard working people in the UK.
"To fly the flag for West Norfolk amongst such prestigious company is amazing. Credit must go to our fantastic team, customers and the world class produce available on our doorstep.”
Sam Handley: “To achieve any position in the Top 50 Gastropubs is a huge honour, but to go straight in at Number 35 as one of the highest new entries is astonishing.
"We are all so proud and keen to get back to Norfolk and carry on doing what we love to do.”
It was the tenth anniversary of the awards, which are presented by The Morning Advertiser.
The Top 50 Gastropub Awards are voted for by leading experts in the food industry and hospitality sector, including gastropubs operators, food writers, executive chefs and pub guide editors.
Since 2013 Ben Handley and his wife Sarah have developed the 18th century building into a popular dining destination.
The Duck was a finalist in The Observer Food Awards 2019 for Best Sunday Lunch, The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year 2017, GQ Top 5 UK Pub 2018 and Norfolk Food Hero 2017.
