Hunstanton RNLI rescues 30 beachgoers from sandbank in Brancaster
Thirty beachgoers were stranded on a sandbank after being cut off by the tide in Brancaster on Saturday.
The Hunstanton RNLI hovercraft joined the Wells RNLI inshore lifeboat in speeding to the scene at Scolt Head Island just before midday.
Most of those trapped managed to wade to safety by the time help arrived at 12:10pm, but the Hunstanton crew brought ten people back to shore.
The Wells crew checked on the safety of two people on the north side of Scolt Head Island, who “opted to remain there”. They were therefore offered water safety advise.
With no further people in immediate danger, the Wells inshore lifeboat was stood down at 12:20pm. The Hunstanton hovercraft conducted a final sweep of the area before returning to station.
“We have yet more reports of people putting their lives in danger trying to wade back to safety - please don't do it,” a social media post by Wells RNLI said.
“To avoid tidal cut off between Brancaster and Cley: get back to the main part of the beach, dry sand/land at least four hours before high tide.
“Have fun, make memories - but please stay safe.”
The incident came days after the RNLI warned people of “incredibly hazardous” conditions in the area due to fast-rising tides, unpredictable water depths and dangerous currents.
