Remembrance marked with parade through Downham Market as dozens honour servicemen and women

Dozens of people have paraded through the streets of Downham to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The annual Remembrance parade was led by RAF Marham under Parade Commander Flight Lieutenant Emily Jenner.

The event, which came after a two-minute silence was held in the town square at 11am on Saturday, honoured the Fallen.

The parade started at the town square at 2pm on Sunday and finished at the war memorial, where a service was conducted by Father James Mather of St Edmund’s Church.

All the Armed Forces were represented by cadets, and youth organisations including GirlGuiding, Rangers and Scouts were also in attendance, as well as representatives from Downham Academy.

A spokesperson for Downham Town Council thanked those who helped organise and run the parade on Sunday.

“It is very important to come together as a town, to honour the memory of all servicemen and women past and present and acknowledge the sacrifices made on our behalf,” they said.

“We are very proud to have seen so many organisations taking part in the parade, and so many residents come to pay their respects.

“We would also like to thank all of those involved in organising and running the parade.”

The event featured more standard bearers than in previous years, with Town Crier Ray Wales having organised the march and the salute was taken by Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk Lady Georgina Roberts.

Meanwhile, Hilgay Silver Band provided music and St John Ambulance was in attendance to provide medical cover should it have been required.

Lady Roberts, Downham mayor Cllr John Doyle, Cllr Andy Bullen of West Norfolk Council, Squadron Leader Hornsby of RAF Marham, Lieutenant Commander Hunt representing the Royal Navy and a representative of the Royal British Legion all laid wreaths at the war memorial.
