Downham Market Town Council calls off meeting over 'Covid scare'

A West Norfolk town council says it has been forced to call off a planned meeting this evening because of coronavirus issues.

Councillors in Downham had been scheduled to gather for a socially distanced meeting at the Jubilee Community Centre in Howdale Road tonight.

But the authority now says the session will not take place because of what it has described as a "Covid scare".

Officials say an unnamed councillor is showing symptoms of the virus and attended a face to face meeting with other councillors and staff.

A post on the council's website said the meeting would be rearranged "once we have the outcome of a Covid test."

The meeting was due to be streamed live via YouTube as well as into the centre's car park.

It was also due to be the first full council meeting held since local authorities were required to revert to in person meetings, after emergency powers to hold debates online expired.
