Downham Market group wants to raise awareness of macular disease

A Downham group, set up to support those living with sight loss, is raising awareness of eye conditions and highlighting how it can offer information and friendship.

Downham Macular Society meets every third Tuesday of the month from 1.30pm to 3.30pm in the function room at the town’s Methodist Church on Paradise Road.

June 23-29 has been designated Macular Week - with the aim of raising awareness of the disease, its impact, the importance of good eye health and why raising money to fund research to find a cure is vital.

Despite macular disease being the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, many people are unaware of the condition and the impact it has on so many lives.

The Macular Society says nearly 1.5million people in the UK are living with the disease. It is a devastating condition, often leaving those affected unable to read, drive or recognise the faces of their loved ones.

The national sight loss charity is encouraging its community of members, volunteers, donors and supporters - including those in Downham - to put the spotlight on the condition.

Sight loss can leave people feeling isolated and the support group gives people an opportunity to socialise, share tips, make new friends, hear from guest speakers or simply enjoy a cup of tea with others living with a visual impairment.

A spokesperson said: “We know losing your sight is incredibly challenging. Many people affected describe losing their sight as being similar to bereavement.

“But this group has been formed to provide information, encouragement and friendship to people who are affected by macular disease and other sight loss conditions, to help them feel less alone.”

Anyone wanting more information about the group can contact its leader Mary on 01366 388660.

The next meeting is Tuesday, June 17 at 1.30pm to 3.30pm with information on all forms of macular disease.

Family and friends are welcome to come along and enjoy an entertaining ‘mix and mingle’ meeting.
