South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss says she is ‘determined’ to continue to serve her constituency after the upcoming general election

Despite an overall predicted Tory slump, Liz Truss remains “determined” to keep her seat as MP for South West Norfolk.

With a general election coming up later this year, a new poll has suggested that the Conservatives’ grip on Norfolk teeters in the balance.

However, the former Prime Minister has said that the next general election will be “tough”, but that she wants to “continue to deliver for people locally”.

Speaking to the Lynn News on a recent visit to Denver Windmill to see its newly-opened cafe, the MP spoke about her aims to get the notorious road in Welney, which is prone to flooding, open more often.

She added that she is also working with local councillors to make sure there is access to as many places at Downham Market Academy as possible as the school currently has 300 parents wanting their child to start in Year 7, with only 270 places available.

Ms Truss said: “I’ve been in Welney meeting local residents and the concern remains the flooding and what we need to get the road open more.

“With the Welney flooding, we are looking for ways with local councillor Chris Dawson of how we can try and keep the road open for longer each year and what kind of solutions might be involved, including improving the signage and helping local residents and it’s really important for local businesses.

“I’m also working to make sure there is as much access to places as possible at Downham Market Academy which is a very popular school.”

She added: “And more generally the biggest issue in my postbox is local dentistry and getting people appointments and also putting pressure on the NHS to get more dentistry in Norfolk.”

After serving her short stint as Prime Minister, Liz Truss said she is “determined” to deliver for her constituency.

With the upcoming general election, Ms Truss said: “I think it's going to be a tough general election, I think everybody recognises that. What I’m determined to do is continue to deliver for people here locally and I’m working hard on that.

“But I also want to see Conservatives deliver nationally and I think that is about reducing immigration which is why I took the stand on the Rwanda bill.

“I want to see the bill toughened up. It's also about cutting people's costs, whether that is energy costs or taxes.

“We’ve been through a difficult period with the war in Ukraine and there’s obviously trouble in the Middle East, I’m just acutely aware that people need all the help they can get with their health and finances.”
