Nearly two thirds of West Norfolk voters did not take part in yesterday's European Parliament elections, officials have confirmed.

The first stage of the counting process, known as verification of the votes, has been taking place in Lynn this morning.

West Norfolk Council says a total of 37,983 ballot papers have been verified out of a total electorate of nearly 112,000.

That equates to a turnout of 33.93 per cent, slightly down on the last European poll in 2014.

But it is still higher than the 28 per cent recorded at the recent local elections.

The actual count does not take place until Sunday evening, once polls have closed in the other member states of the European Union.
