Vital work to improve flood-prone Watlington roads kicks off in November

Vital work to improve a village road which is prone to flooding will kick off at the start of November.

Norfolk County Council is set to carry out the essential drainage improvement works on Mill Road and Plough Lane in Watlington.

The scheme is due to start on November 3 and will last for 12 weeks, excluding a two-week Christmas break, and will finish January 16 subject to any weather or construction delays.

A spokesperson for the council said: “There is currently little to no drainage system on Mill Road and Plough Lane and the road surface and some properties within the area are prone to flooding, so Norfolk County Council is looking to install a new carrier pipe and gullied system to alleviate these issues.”

To install the new drainage system, workers will need to have an open excavation along the road.

This means that a road closure will be required, and there is an aim to phase the works so that traffic management will be removed over the Christmas break.

Access for residents will be maintained from either end of Mill Road and Plough Lane depending on where the works are at the time, and contractors will keep residents informed on how to access their properties.

“Our contractors on site will also be able to assist you with any questions during the works,” the spokesperson added.

“The county council thanks people for their patience while this improvement work is carried out.”

The work will cost £150,000 and will be carried out by the county council’s infrastructure department and its contractors.
