Swaffham Cultural Consortium delighted as thousands attend artisan fair
Agricultural history was celebrated at Swaffham on Sunday with a day of makers, stalls and food.
Funded through the Historic England High Street Action Zone and with help from Breckland Council, the event was created to raise the profile of shopping local.
Held on Sunday, organisers from the Swaffham Cultural Consortium looked to highlight a decline of in-store shopping and a rise of online buying, and introduce visitors to the culture of Swaffham.
Vanessa Scott; who helped organise and support the event, said it helped residents to get “back in touch with their roots”.
The motivation was to be able to tell a story of the town’s history through art and food, and bring the community together through a connection of culture – with thousands of people attending.
Ali Dover – who helped promote the event – said she was “completely bowled over” in response to the number of volunteers who helped and supported the day.
“It was a really good day,” she added.
There was a cookery theatre with Norfolk writer Mary Kemp, demonstrations of local cuisine and food influenced from further afield, as well as a broad spectrum of the best local artisans.
One successful stallholder managed to sell more on Sunday than they had at any previous events.
As a result of how the event went, Vanessa and Ali are planning to create these fairs annually.
