West Norfolk Mayor’s Business Awards 2024: Walpole Highway-based Tamar Nurseries wins Environmental Champion accolade
“We can look after the planet in a much better way” – that was the message from the boss of a company that took home the Environmental Champion prize at this year’s Mayor’s Business Awards.
It came after Tamar Nurseries Limited, which is based in Walpole Highway and grows more than a million plants each year, received the award at the ceremony held at Lynn's Alive Corn Exchange on Friday.
Its managing director Johan Huibers said the recognition “meant so much” for the company, its staff and his family.
Johan, who has worked at Tamar Nurseries since 1992, said: “I just want to share the message that we can look after the planet in a much better way and I want to share that with everybody in the world.
“It can be done, we just need to get started.”
It was not the first time that Tamar Nurseries had won the award – having received the same accolade back at the 2022 awards.
The Environmental Champion category was sponsored by West Norfolk Council, with Cllrs Michael de Whalley, cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity, and Sandra Squire, cabinet member for environment and coastal, presenting the award to the team on behalf of the council.
Tamar Nurseries was up against British Sugar and Mickram Ltd for the prize, which judges said would be presented to the business that “best demonstrates a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, improve the use of resources by cutting waste, reduce pollution and increase its environmental understanding”.
