Swaffham Town Council hosts event to mark 80th anniversary of D-Day landings
Residents came together for a poignant event which honoured the efforts of soldiers during the Second World War.
Swaffham Town Council hosted an event to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944.
A grant from Breckland District Council helped to make the day possible, while local businesses joined in by offering up delicious fish and chips for those in attendance.
Meanwhile, there were touching speeches and tributes as well.
Helen Carrier, the town clerk, said: “We were honored to host a D-Day 80 commemoration event in Swaffham, which brought our community together in remembrance.
“The commemoration, organised in conjunction with the Royal British Legion and the Iceni Partnership Swaffham, began with our Town Crier Nigel Wilkin reading a heartfelt proclamation.
“Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Hull then delivered a poignant international tribute, followed by the lighting of the beacon and a moving performance of Taps by Steve Kemp on the bugle.
“In celebration of National Fish and Chip Day, we offered subsidised fish and chip vouchers to the residents of Swaffham. We extend our thanks to Mother Hubbards and Mr Chips for their support with this.
“Additionally, we are grateful to Breckland District Council for the grant, which made this event possible. It was truly wonderful to see the community come together to mark this important moment.”
