Tribute paid to well-known auctioneer Barry L Hawkins who died at his home aged 86
A well-known and “flamboyant” West Norfolk auctioneer, land agent and valuer who was “passionate about caring for his clients” has died following a short illness.
Barry L Hawkins died at his home on Monday (December 2) at the age of 86 and was working with clients in the farming community up to his dying days.
Barry L Hawkins is a family-fun business which dates back to 1850. He had links to the cattle market, parliament and solicitors and is well known in West Norfolk.
A spokesperson from the firm said: “He relished the challenges dealing with all walks of life with the same respect. Helping clients solve difficult problems and providing extensive knowledge and expertise to many clients, charities, as well as businesses throughout the region.”
The Downham-based business will remain open during this difficult time for staff at the firm.
Despite facing personal challenges throughout his life including losing his eldest son Thomas and daughter Louise, who both lost their respective battles to cancer, he maintained an “infectious enjoyable outlook to life”.
His maxim to life was to “face everything and recover”.
The spokesperson added: “He thoroughly enjoyed his time as a livestock auctioneer and valuer, travelling around rural Norfolk and the surrounding counties and considered most of his clients as friends.
“He certainly regarded himself as a country auctioneer and although not an expert, his depth of knowledge was extensive on many aspects through his years of experience.”
Barry leaves behind his wife of 64 years Valerie and his youngest son Marcus as well as extended family and staff in Downham.
There will be a private family service followed by a memorial thanksgiving service at a later date.
