West Norfolk MP delighted at Boris Johnson leadership win

A West Norfolk MP has hailed the election of Boris Johnson as the new Conservative leader, claiming he will deliver a "successful and dynamic" Britain.

The former foreign secretary secured almost twice as many votes as his rival Jeremy Hunt in the party's leadership election, the result of which was announced earlier today.

And South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss, who has been one of Mr Johnson's key aides in the contest, welcomed the result.

She said a short time ago: "Congratulations to Boris Johnson.

"From Wednesday the United Kingdom will have a new prime minister who has the drive and energy to deliver Brexit, to ensure a successful and dynamic Britain."

Ms Truss, the current chief secretary to the Treasury, has been widely tipped to be Chancellor in the new government.

Mr Johnson will formally succeed Theresa May as Prime Minister tomorrow.

But Labour's Jo Rust said she was worried his election would make the current situation even worse.

She said: "I'm concerned that we're going to be rushed into a no deal Brexit which will be disastrous for our country and economy."

However, Richard Tunnicliffe, the CBI's East of England regional director, said businesses shared Mr Johnson's optimism for the future.

He said: "Let’s work together to get our economy back on track and working for communities everywhere.

“Business needs three things in the first 100 days. A Brexit deal that unlocks confidence; clear signals the UK is open for business; and a truly pro-enterprise vision for our country.

“On Brexit, the new Prime Minister must not underestimate the benefits of a good deal. It will unlock new investment and confidence in factories and boardrooms across the country. Business will back you across Europe to help get there.

“Early signals back home also matter. From a new immigration system to green-lighting major infrastructure, there is no time to waste.”
