West Norfolk MP says he 'deplores attempted coup' against Prime Minister Theresa May

By Lynn News Reporter

A West Norfolk MP has said he "deplores" the call for vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Theresa May's leadership which she will face later today, with it amounting to an "attempted coup against her".

It comes after the Prime Minister postponed the vote on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement on Monday.

North West Norfolk MP Sir Henry Bellingham said: "The Prime Minister has my full support at a time when she is in the middle of key meetings with different EU countries.

"Although the Prime Minister's Withdrawal Agreement is far from perfect, it does give us the best hope of delivering a legal Brexit.

"I absolutely deplore this attempted coup against her".

South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said this morning that Mrs May is the "right person to deliver Brexit".

Ms Truss tweeted a short time ago: "I fully support the Prime Minister and believe it would be completely wrong to have a leadership election now.

"She is the right person to deliver Brexit and has shown herself to be strong and determined."

Lord Gary Porter, leader of South Holland District Council, said the vote was a "distraction at a time the country can least afford to lose its focus".

He tweeted: "Really disappointed that some of our MPs have decided now is the time to challenge Theresa May, this is a distraction at a time the country can least afford to lose its focus.

"Every @LGACons (Local Government Association Conservative Group) Leader should speak to their MPs to make sure they focus on the National Interest."

Alex Mayer, MEP for the East of England region, said the vote was an "extraordinary act of self indulgence by the Conservatives who are as ever more concerned about themselves than the fate of the country".

She added: "We don’t need a Tory leadership contest, we need a General election or a People’s Vote on the deal.

"My colleagues in Brussels and Strasbourg are frankly bewildered. Chaos, confusion and tumult reigns.”
